Tommy's Train Ride on the Alaska Railroad
Published in Paperback by Publication Consultants (01 December, 1999)
Author: Bonnie Pennington
Average review score:

A wonderful children's adventure story
A very well illustrated and written narrative of a train ride into the wilderness of Alaska. I am a collector of Alaskana books and was happy to add this to my extensive collection. The author writes of things that children are intersted in: trains, adventure, and the last frontier. Take a ride along the worlds most remote rails from the sprawling metropolis of Anchorage to the remote wilds which fervidly encroach upon its front door. Even if you are not a fan of Alaskana this book will interest all train aficionados, wilderness fans, and watercolor devotees. Rustle up your adventure gear and grab your conductors cap this ride's destination is pure delightful entertainment.

Tommy's Train Ride : On the Alaska Railroad
This is a wonderful children's book that gives insightful information on the Alaska Railroad. The watercolors in the book are colorful and vivid as they portray Alaska's beauty in the summer. Two thumbs up!

With Their Own Blood -
I found the book well written, with Ms Roberts' delivering a colorful portrayal of western history. As a resident of the Nogales - Patagonia - Sonoita area I found her work verifiable and acurate, providing myself and by family a valuable source of information on our local history.

A side note: The Pennington family homestead was recently rediscovered and preservation efforts will hopefully save the remaining structure.

This was an excellent book!
This book was extremely excellent, and life-like. Ms. Virginia Culin Roberts did an excellent job writing this book. Way to go Virginia!

Centered Living: The Way of Centering Prayer
Published in Paperback by Image Books (September, 1988)
Authors: M. Basil Pennington and Basil Pennington
Average review score:

An Excellent Reappraisal
After two decades of practicing Eastern meditation, I found what I felt was missing, thanks to Centering Prayer: the presence of the Personhood of God. (I'd grown tired of mind traps and fruitless stillness, and methods emphasing words, breath control, where meditation really degenerated into my clinging to basically repetitive superstitious gesture. Actually, I'm grateful for such experience because it helps me avoid such things in practicing Centering Prayer). The humble, insightful M. Basil Pennington and his colleagues offer a work that is conversational, not didactic. This book boldly asserts the reality of a loving God. All those years I'd focused on the Void, the Impersonal, an inner Something, Someone, kept prodding me, which I initially rejected as old Catholic-school training that was re-surfacing. Now, for me, the big Drawing Card is that the Divine Person glows as the crux, the heart, the very beauty, of this book. Also, Rabbi Kushner, in his foreword, speaks poignantly on becoming one with God as a "Heart Person" in life. So many insightful people, from many spiritual paths have generously contributed to this book. I'm grateful for it.

Collected Poems
Published in Paperback by Anvil Press Poetry (July, 2003)
Authors: Vasko Popa, Anne Pennington, Francis R. Jones, and Ted Hughes
Average review score:

I'm going to learn Serbian to read this in the original
Popa is one of the most amazing poets I have ever read. I am often skeptical about translations of Slavic poetry into English, but these are truly surpurb. Anne Pennington, the primary translator, worked very closely with Popa until her death in 1981 (in fact, the first poem is a tribute to her). She strove to communicate Popa's unique imagery and themes, not to hold on to rhythms and sounds solely belonging to the original. His poetry is metaphorically very complex, but as he oversaw nearly all of the translations, this volume is as good as you'll get without learning Serbian. I read about half of the 400-odd pages in one sitting. Absolutely wonderful.

Daily We Follow Him: Learning Discipleship from Peter
Published in Paperback by Image Books (February, 1987)
Author: M. Basil Pennington
Average review score:

Learning how the mature in Christ
Most Christians believe that spritual giants are born and not made. Father Basil Pennington takes the Biblical record of the life of Saint Peter and shows us how Christ could take a man filled with flaws and shape him into a hero of the faith.

Protestants will benefit from this study as much as Catholics will. All Christians are flawed and we all need to allow Christ to sit on the throne of our hearts and become the center of our lives. Peter's example shows that we, too, can become spiritual giants if we only continue to seek first the Kingdom of God.

This is one of the most influential books in my life and I believe and pray that it be of equal benefit to you.

Diagnosing Learning Disorders: A Neuropsychological Framework
Published in Hardcover by Guilford Press (21 June, 1991)
Author: Bruce F. Pennington
Average review score:

Eye-opener
I came across this book a few years back and found that it had a strong influence on how I thought about and conceptualized learning disorders. Pennington does a nice job of integrating research with case studies. The NVLD chapter especially had an effect upon how I conceptualized assessment data and presented it to parents and professionals. A good survey of the neuropsychological underpinnings of various learning disorders. The material in each chapter has been covered in greater depth in other writings, but this provides a good overview and catalyst for changing the way one thinks about learning disorders. May be a bit technical for nonprofessionals, but Pennington's writing style is generally readable.

Eucharist: Yesterday and Today

Eucharist:Yesterday and Today
This book is still readily available as it has been reprinted by "St Pauls Publishing". Should anyone wish to enquire about it they should contact St Pauls Morpeth Terrace London WWC1A 2HR.020 7828 5582. This book is a must have for all catholics and christians alike as it deals with the mystery and the sacrament of the Eucharist in an historical manner, in reader friendly language; nor does it presume any prior knowledge of the subject. Sacramental theology is full of pitfalls for the uninitiated, but this small, comprehensive - yet concise book expounds the theology in a way that is sure to deepen the reader's understanding. The eucharist is where man meets God and communes, however briefly, with his creator. For the catholic this book will deepen spirituality and awareness of what is happening during the celebration of the sacrament central to the church's day to day living. It is a gem of a book that can teach one to treasure the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Europe in the Seventeenth Century (2nd Edition)
Published in Textbook Binding by Pearson Education UK (July, 1989)
Author: D. H. Pennington
Average review score:

A Good Introductory History
Pennington's second edition to this work in the Longman "General History of Europe" series was certainly worth the effort. Pennington gives a good treatment of the sources for what we know about seventeenth-century Europe, the society, the economy, religion, science, governments, and political history, with the latter surely being most extensive in this work.

However, the fact that the book is slightly biased towards political history should not too surprising, for the book is a general history, but also because the seventeenth century was one of statecraft (e.g., Jean-Baptiste Colbert under Louis XIV in France, the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg-Prussia, Peter the Great of Russia, etc.) as well as copious wars. In noting the state, Pennington traces some states that began their ascendency during this period (e.g., Brandenburg-Prussia, Russia, etc.) as well as states that had reached the apex of their power and began (sometimes slowly) to decline (e.g., the Ottoman Empire, Habsburg Austria, Spain, etc.). France is probably afforded a slightly more extensive treatment than the other states. This is understandable considering the importance of France as a "great power" in this period, but also because it reflects the (often) deeper professional scholarship that has been done in French history.

This work is one of the better general histories for this period and has a rather extensive bibliography for those interested in further study of the seventeenth history in Europe. It is a great introduction to the period for the student of the period and is often used as one of the texts for undergraduate history courses on the seventeenth history.
